Mayweather criticized Canelo for not fighting Benavidez

By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. slammed Canelo Alvarez today for courting David Benavidez, his WBC 168-lb title opponent.

Mayweather doesn’t like Canelo’s weak excuse for not fighting Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs), saying he doesn’t want to fight any Mexican fighter.

Mayweather doesn’t buy that excuse, as he points out that Canelo has made a career out of beating Mexican fighters.

So why suddenly, when faced with a dangerous fight against ‘Mexican Monster’ Benavidez, Canelo said he doesn’t want to fight Mexican fighters?

Mayweather said that if black fighters take this aim, boxing fans will not see who is better than anyone else because in Floyd’s opinion, “the best fighters are black.”

It’s obvious in the eyes of Canelo’s fans that he avoids Benavidez like the plague because he doesn’t want to humiliate him in a losing fight.

It’s one thing for Canelo to lose a decision to Dmitry Bivol and Mayweather, but it’s a different story for Benavidez to come out.

“As a publicist, I am far from racist. I don’t have a racist bone in my body,” Floyd Mayweather Jr told Fighthype. “When I left, I stood behind many young fighters who came out of the struggle.

“It doesn’t matter where they come from. They can be from Mexico or anywhere. I want to help fighters achieve what they want to achieve in boxing.

“You have to understand that Crawford, and Spence, are two hell of a fighter. It’s wrong if they pull Canelo. He said, ‘I don’t want to fight a Mexican fighter.’

“Canelo played a great role in beating the Mexican fighters, but now he says he doesn’t want to take the Benavidez fight. He was talking about not wanting to fight Mexican fighters. This is the way to go backwards.

“If that’s the case and Canelo is saying that and everybody is standing behind Canelo, then all the black fighters out there can say, ‘You know what? We’re not going to fight each other.’

“You know why black fighters can’t say that? Because they say, ‘The best fight the best. The big ones fought the big ones, didn’t they? All the best and greatest fighters are black,” said Mayweather.
