His father, former world champion Fernando Vargas, was one of the most prominent fighters in boxing from the late 1990s to the mid-2000s.
He faced a list of opponents, including Yori Boy Campas, Raul Marquez, Winky Wright, Ike Quartey, Felix Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya, and Shane Mosley, among others.
Fast forward to now. Emiliano Vargas (1-0, 1 KO), the youngest of Fernando’s three boxing sons, is set to make his Las Vegas debut for his new promoter, Bob Arum’s Top Rank Boxing.
Emiliano’s two brothers are also undefeated boxers. Fernando Vargas Jr. is 6-0, with 6 KOs, and Amado Vargas is 4-0, with 2 KOs. Will they be close to ink with the popular Las Vegas-based promotion company?
Emiliano made his debut in April and will now look to make his debut on November 12 in the 4th round at the Pearl Concert Hall at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.
The fight will be part of the night’s main event card, which features Kazakhstan’s Janibek Alimkhanuly and England’s Denzel Bentley in a WBO world title fight. In Los Angeles, Seniesa Estrada defended her world bantamweight title against Argentina’s Jazmin Gala Villarino.
While the name Vargas can open a few doors for a boxer, there can also be a lot of pressure in terms of expectations in the shadow of his famous father – now his trainer. But the younger Vargas fight became more happy than anything else to make his mark in the sport that made pop popular.
In a statement he released recently, he said, “I can’t wait to fight. Heritage is everything, but at the same time, I came to write my own story and make my family proud.
Vargas would look to stay busy under the Top Rank umbrella, but the 18-year-old, Oxnard, California native, now living and training in Las Vegas, certainly has time on his side. While Top Rank will look to move him at a steady pace, he knows he has to impress every time.
“It’s about how I work, but Top Rank will help me to the next level.”
While Vargas is looking to impress and make his own mark, he is also proud to be part of his father’s legacy.
“This is my legacy like my father’s”, he said. “This is something that is deep in my family and as a Mexican. I want to be Fernando Vargas, Julio Cesar Chavez. There is something good about the whole country having your back. I am proud of my roots. I can’t wait to play and have my fans embrace me like they embraced my dad.”
His father and trainer, Fernando, took the family name to greater heights during his time in boxing. Emiliano is looking to continue that legacy – the next step on that journey will begin on November 12.
