Vasyl Lomachenko (17-2, 11 KOs) made a late surge to defeat unbeaten Jamaine Ortiz (16-1-1, 8 KOs) with a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night in a fight that closer than scores extended. two of the judges at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The judges scored it 115-113, 116-112, and 117-111. Of those three, the 115-113 score makes the most sense, given that Ortiz appears to have won at least five rounds. He fought hard to take the first four and the eighth.

The 26-year-old Ortiz used his big advantage to defeat former world champion Lomachenko in the first four rounds.

Ortiz looked like a rehydrated welterweight in the ring tonight, and his size worked in his favor against the smaller Lomachenko early on.

But like many of the fighters who drop themselves to compete in divisions below their body size and don’t back it up, Ortiz really faded away in the second half of the fight, which allowed Lomachenko to dominate and take over. campaign to win.

Lomachenko used his speed, combinations, and precise, accurate shots to get the better of Ortiz from the fifth to the twelfth round.

Earlier in the fight, Lomachenko’s right hand was red by a right hand thrown by Ortiz. No punches were missed, but a right hand and tape scraped Lomachenko’s right eye, causing him to blush.

In the fifth round, Ortiz’s left eye began to swell after Lomachenko nailed him with a hard right hand.

After the fight, heavyweight champion Devin Haney entered the ring, and expressed interest in Lomachenko’s next fight.

During one instance, Lomachenko kidded Haney about him being like a “heavyweight”. This is a bit much. In fact, Haney looks like a 154-pounder in the ring.

The thing is, Haney is not overweight. He came out full and didn’t let up like he did in his fight against George Kambosos Jr on October 15th.

In the co-feature fight, featherweight contender Robeisy Ramirez (11-1, 7 KOs) stopped Jose Matias Romero (26-3, 9 KOs) in the ninth round of a scheduled ten round fight.

Southpaw Robeisy hurt Romero with a left to the head in the ninth, which caused his legs to turn to jelly, causing him to fly backwards to the ropes.

Then Robeisy landed right and left on the head which made the referee step in and stop the game.

As far as the kicks go, Robeisy did not do well, because he mostly used one punch and was unable to reach Romero who overpowered him so much that he needed him to take him out.

Robeisy is expected to fight Isaac Dogboe next in the WBO featherweight championship after Emmanuel Navarrete moves up to 130.
