Jeff Fenech awarded the WBC title after Azumah Nelson refused | Biden News

Australian boxer Jeff Fenech has won his fourth world championship 30 years after being robbed of his belt by the judges.

The boxing world was shocked in 1991 when Fenech looked like he had won against Azumah Nelson of Ghana in Las Vegas, but the score was returned to a draw.

Nine months later the pair met again and the Aussie suffered his first career loss, Nelson winning by stoppage.

The disease has stuck with Fenech for the past 30 years but on Tuesday he was handed the belt that had eluded him.

The 58-year-old was called to the world at a World Boxing event in Mexico and officially handed the featherweight title.

“All the ring officials from all over the world scored against Jeff Fenech,” said WBC President Mauricio Sulaimán.

“The WBC Board of Governors approved the proposal to nominate Jeff Fenech to become a four-time world champion.”

By the time of the 1991 robbery, Fenech had already won the bantamweight, super-bantamweight, and featherweight world titles.

Tuesday’s announcement made him a four-time world champion.
