By Brian Webber: Chris Van Heerden says he thinks Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis has won more than IBF, WBA & WBC welterweight champion Errol ‘The Truth’ Spence.
Van Heerden has fought them both, and says that when Boots Ennis (29-0, 27 KOs) beats him in their fight in 2020, the power is on a different level than Spence.
With that said, Van Heerden believes that Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) will beat Boots because he has the advantage in experience and is better technically.
Ennis, 25 years old, is the young fighter, and he wanted a title shot with Spence, but that didn’t happen. With Spence likely to move up to 154 soon, he probably won’t be going to Boots for a title shot before he vacates his belt.
You’d love to see Spence give Boots the title shot, especially with the Terence Crawford fight not happening, but it’s not realistic that’s going to happen.
Boots hit harder than Spence
“Spence hit me a lot. Ennis hit me knowing that he didn’t throw me, but when he hit me, it was like, ‘Oh boy,'” said Chris van Heerden to Fight Hub, talking about the difference in power between Jaron. Boots’ Enis and Spence Jr.’s mistake.
“Ennis’ power is greater than Spence’s; I will tell you this. When Ennis hit me, I was a little scared. I was like, ‘Oh damn, this is a different power.’
“Spence is technically a pure fighter. He’s 80%. He’s strong. Ennis is wild. He jumps; he’s aggressive, he’s wild. When he hit me, it was like a red light went off. ‘Oh, that’s why this guy fired everyone.’
“He has power; the children got power. My immediate thought in my head in this round was, ‘He hit harder than Spence.’ I took Spence’s power. Spence had a 90% knockout ratio when I fought him. When Spence hit me, I respected his power, but I was like, ‘Wait, that’s not enough to take me out by hand.’
“When Ennis hit me, I was like, ‘Oh s***t, I’ve got to keep my hands up because this kid can take me out with one punch.’ He’s got power, man. Real power. They both have real power, but Ennis makes a lot of noise.
“Right now, no,” Van Heerden said when asked if Ennis beat Spence. “You can’t tell Ennis is coming. Ennis has almost 30 fights. Ennis is not a baby anymore. He is a real fighter.
“But actually, Spence is really good. Ennis is a wild guy, and a guy like Spence who’s such a great fighter, he’s going to make you pay if you’re wild.”
“Spence has fought big names, big names, better names, better opponents. So, I’m rooting for Spence to beat Ennis. Even though he’s not knocked out. I don’t think he’s going to knock him out. I think Spence beat him at the moment.
Van Heerden chose Spence over Crawford
“I got Spence again,” Van Heerden said when asked to pick a winner between Spence and Terence Crawford. “I fought Spence; I stood before him; he is a big boy. It has dangerous power. He is a natural 147-lb fighter. Maybe a middleweight, middleweight natural; he is a big boy.
“The 135-pound Terence is coming. I’m standing in front of Terence. He’s very small compared to Spence. He’s the most athletic, the most skilled, Terence Crawford. But can Terence Crawford handle Spence’s power? Round one, round two, maybe yes.
“When Spence fought Lamont Peterson, I said, ‘Spence broke you. You might think you can handle his power, but by the time you get to six rounds, your legs are gone because the kid broke you.’
“When he fought Lamont Peterson, he showed up again. I said, ‘Spence’s going to touch this body, and he’s going to stop moving,’ and that’s what happened to him.”
“Now who do I like more? I’m rooting for Spence because he’s the greatest 147-pounder. But Terence is the more athletic, skilled fighter, but I’m still rooting for Spence to beat him. That’s what he would do. Kill him, and the referee stops the fight. So I’m going to lean towards a late stop.
“Once he realizes his style of tagging you, he just tags you and tags you and gets stronger every round. It adds up. I think Spence has a solid defense, he’s very smart, and he’s getting better.
“They’re two outstanding weighers, two of the best welders in the division. “One of them will make a mistake, and he will pay, but I still support Spence,” said Van Heerden.
