Eddie Hearn, the promoter of lightweight champion Katie Taylor, will focus on her rematch with Amanda Serrana at Croke Park in Ireland.
Last Saturday night in London, 36-year-old Taylor retained her title with a dominant ten-round decision over challenger Karen Elizabeth Carabajal.
Back in April, Taylor fought through fire to defeat Serrano with a close decision at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Taylor, who turned pro in 2016, has been pushing Hearn to bring her back to her hometown — and she’s hoping that will happen with Serrano.
“[It’s] very much on the radar and I think we’ve got to go ahead, we’ve got to bring it to Ireland,” Hearn told BBC Radio Ulster. “The first one sold out Madison Square Garden and it was one of the best fights we’ve ever seen. . I think a night of boxing like this at Croke Park will fill the place up quickly and could lead to some up-and-coming Irish talent.
“For years and years, everywhere I’ve been, every Irish man and woman has stopped me, saying, ‘When are you going to bring Katie Taylor to Ireland?’ ‘t. Croke Park is a big stadium but it’s the epitome of Irish sport. I think we can give the Irish a night or two they’ll never forget.”
Hearn stated that he tried to fight again last month, in Ireland, but Serrano would not be ready for the scheduled date.
A new target date has not yet been determined.
“I think September 15th or 17th of this year is the date we’re looking at,” Hearn said.
“After April 30 at Madison Square Garden, we want to try and turn it around quickly and do it. It’s not ready – the fight – because Serrano is not ready for that date, but now we’re moving into 2023 we have a range – not a definite choice but definitely a spring/summer choice.
“We’re going to start the talks again. They’ve been good and everyone’s behind the meeting and we’re looking forward to revisiting that. A lot of discussions and work has already been done. There’s still a lot of work ahead.” but certainly getting through the process of making things in order, the response has been very positive.”
