By Jack Tiernan: Eddie Hearn says David Benavidez’s win over Caleb ‘Sweethands’ Plant is the type of thing that will put him in position to fight Canelo Alvarez.
In the next breath, Hearn admitted that Canelo was the one “he calls the shots,” and for him, the fight against Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs) does not impress him.
With that said, Hearn thinks there’s a chance Canelo will change his mind about not wanting to fight Benavidez if he beats ‘Sweethands’ Plant early next year.
Obviously, for Canelo to change his mind, there would need to be a lot of pressure from the boxing public to fight Benavidez, and right now, with him fighting the minors, there isn’t a big need.
While boxing fans know who Benavidez is and want to see Canelo face him, the fans have no idea who he is and don’t care.
You could argue that regular fans know who it is Dmitry Bivol He is better than Benavidez, and he only came to know them after his victory over Canelo last May.
American fans should know Benavidez better than Bivol, but it’s not because he hasn’t fought anyone famous enough to notice him.
Bivol is the man Canelo wants to fight next to get revenge for what he did to him, which makes him look bad in front of his fans at his usual venue at T-Mobile Arena.
For Benavidez to jump in front of Bivol for Canelo’s place, he probably needs the first plant hit for next year.
If Benavidez knocks Plant out in the first or second round in January, he should be available to fight Canelo in May.

This is the kind of fight that will put Benavidez in a great position to fight Canelo Alvarez because it’s the fight that will give him a profile,” said Eddie Hearn for Fight Hub TV, in response to David Benavidez fighting Caleb Plant next.
“I don’t know who won this fight, actually. I think Benavidez, but it’s a very good fight. I’m glad to see it done. Yes, business-wise, the subject of the deal that everyone wants, but Canelo Alvarez is the boss; he is the main leader. He will call all the shots all the time, with me fighting.
“I know what it’s like. If Benavidez makes a big play against Caleb Plant and everyone starts calling this fight, Saul will have no problem fighting Benavidez, but he has to please him.
“At present, He never fought with anyone, Benavidez. I don’t think he was impressed, but perhaps after the Battle of Shuka; this is a great fight,” said Hearn.
