By Sean Jones: Dmitriy Bivol says challenger Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez often talks about his belief that he has been fighting him for a long time.
On Saturday night, Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) will defend his WBA light heavyweight title against unbeaten Ramirez (44-0, 30 KOs) on DAZN in Abu Dhabi.
Not only did former WBO middleweight champion Ramirez talk about Bivol avoiding him, but he was also mentioned as wanting to avenge his loss to Mexico by Canelo Alvarez by beating Dmitry.
Last May, Bivol took Canelo to school, giving him boxing lessons for a surprisingly easy 12-round knockout in front of a horrified crowd of Alvarez fans at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
The question is, who will make up for Ramirez’s loss if Bivol beats him as badly as Canelo? Who is out there who can make up for his loss next Saturday?
You could argue that the talent that Bivol showed that night is one that Canelo can only wish he had as a fighter.
Many casual fans have weighed in on Canelo’s skills, saying he’s talented. However, in reality, he was always a skilled fighter who achieved success with his striking and hand speed.
Yes, Canelo mimicked some of the moves Floyd Mayweather Jr. did in beating him in 2013, but he was still very weak.
Ramirez, 31, is getting his dream fight against Bivol after all this time, but unless he shows more talent than what we’ve seen lately, he’ll be quiet.
Ramirez looked very, very careful with the speed of his hands and movements. You can tell from looking at Ramirez that he’s a cruiserweight because he’s too big and slow to fight at 175.
For Ramirez’s last fight at heavyweight, he weighed down again to 203 lbs, which tells you he’s not in the 175lb division.
Cruiserweights are generally slower than heavyweights, and that clearly explains why Ramirez is so slow in the 175-lb division.
