By Sam Volz: Tim Bradley was pleased with WBA champion Dmitry Bivol’s victory over Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez on November 5.
The way that Bivol (21-0, 11 KOs) moved in and out of range and dominated the weight-sized former WBO super middleweight champion Ramirez (44-1, 30 KOs) impressed Bradley.
Bivol played with the previously unbeaten Ramirez, defeating him by 12 points with scores of 117-111, 117-111, and 118-110.
Ramirez, 6’4″, has the size advantage, but it doesn’t matter because Bivol is out of bounds when the Mexican star tries to land.
Later in the fight, Bivol found out that he was too quick for Ramirez inside, and he worked with him.
Bivol could face Canelo Alvarez in their next fight in May. Whether or not the fight happens will likely depend on Canelo’s surgically repaired left hand being ready to go.
“This is a bad boy. He beat some weight, bro,” Tim Bradley told KO Artist Sports about Dmitry Bivol’s win over Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez on November 5th.
“Ramirez came in around 200 lbs, and he [Bivol] support him. I live there. [Ramirez’s trainer] Julian [Chu], if you called me. I was like, ‘What kind of game show are you doing? Are you trying to get a boxer out? What the hell are you trying to do? And you’re being pushed on the back foot from the opening bell?’
“I was beaten. I was like, ‘Oh my God, what is he doing? What you up to? You should go ahead, use your pride, use your strength, try to abuse this person.’ Go to him; let those meetings fly. He didn’t do that,” said Bradley about Zurdo Ramirez not being able to throw a combination using his size against Bivol.
“I say to myself; I’m trying to understand the game plan. It is too late when the change happens too late. But Bivol, that’s a bad dude. The crazy thing is that Bivol is a small person, but his ability to control the distance and still control progress at the same time. This is a brilliant thing.
“I got Bivol when he was fighting [Artur] Beterbiev. Man, listen to me. I’m telling you, Bivol knows every part of the ring. On the rope, he knows all this. He knows how to get down. The gameplay is amazing and inside.
“We said he has no inner game. Bivol has an inside game; he does. He put these people in a position, then he used it, and then he let his hand go. I’ve never seen Ramirez look so scared. He was scared.
“Every time he took out, he was not in balance, and Bivol was very close and at the right range to let them hand. He looked at him. This defense of Bivol, I tell you.
“I know the power, and whatever you want to say is different from the hand or the rock type of power. He still got the stuff down. He still found a way to get the stuff down.
“It’s a 50-50 fight because of power, and Beterbiev is smart too, but the legs. That’s a different type, there. That’s the difference there, boxing.
“Bivol’s feet are better, and I think he’s more defensive. I think he’ll cut Beterbiev. He’ll cut his back up. But if he’s caught, it could be night, night. But his IQ is very high.
“This dude is a big five-pounder. Bivol is a bad boy. No doubt about it,” Bradley said when Bivol was told he could be the 2022 champion. “He beat Canelo and he beat the champion with 40 battles like this and he played with them?
“Bro, I didn’t think he could play with them like that. It’s a toy with them, a simple, honest job,” Bradley said.
