Former WBO featherweight champion Barry Jones has ‘showed more support’ for Deontay Wilder to beat Anthony Joshua if they fight each other. The boxer who returned to boxing once chose Joshua but now he thinks ‘there is something that was not lost before.
Joshua is set to return to the ring in early 2023 after his recent defeat to Oleksandr Usyk. According to promoter Eddie Hearn, the winner of Dillian Whyte and Jermaine Franklin on November 26 is the ‘front-runner’ for Joshua’s next fight.
The Matchroom Boxing boss also hinted at the possibility of a long-awaited rematch with Wilder taking place at the end of last year and gave all the positives in ‘AJ’s’ next two fights. Wilder and manager Shelly Finkel announced their intention to take the fight and initial discussions between the two parties were held via e-mail.
Over the years, the fight has failed to get him off the negotiating table but with Wilder recently admitting that he will retire at the age of 40, the conservatives are trying to make a fight. With that in mind, Jones broke down the fight during a recent interview with Intu Boxing and explained why he is now backing Wilder to take home the win.
“If Joshua goes down first, he can take you out, but I think Wilder can take it or get up. If Wilder hits you right, as you’re going forward, you’re done. I still think there’s something he less with Joshua, who was not lost before [his defeats], whether this is reasonable, confident or if he is not sure of himself. You can see, he second guessed himself.
“Even if there are too many voices, I don’t know what it is, I don’t blame anyone, but he is not one. “He’s still a hero, but he’s clearly vulnerable and because of his style and the way he is, that’s not a good thing.”
Wilder is expected to face Andy Ruiz Jr in the WBC final for a shot at Tyson Fury’s green belt. Sanctions chairman Mauricio Sulaimán has confirmed that the fight will be ordered at this week’s WBC general meeting.
