By Craig Page: Promoter Sampson Lewkowicz says David Benavidez will fight WBA ‘regular’ super middleweight champion David Morrell in May or June, provided the Cuban fighter wins his fight next Saturday night against Aidos Yerbossynuly on November 5 .
Lewkowicz said they have a contract for Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs) to fight the undefeated Morrell (7-0, 6 KOs). The 24-year-old Morrell will defend the unbeaten Yerbossynuly (16-0, 11 KOs) on Showtime at The Armory, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
According to Lewkowicz, Benavidez’s planned fight against former IBF 168-lb champion Jose Uzcategui in January is still up in the air, as there are “a few issues” that need attention.
When asked if a fight between Benavidez and Caleb Plant could happen, Sampson didn’t feel confident about it happening.
Morrell is arguably more talented than Plant, but he is less well known. Even though it’s a tough fight, Benavidez won’t get the attention he’s facing like Plant, who is famous for his fights with Canelo Alvarez, Anthony Dirrell, and Uzcategui.
