By Dan Ambrose: Canelo Alvarez is in good shape to face Dmitry Bivol next year after recovering from his injured arm. If Canelo turns down the Bivol rematch, his fans will dismiss him as royalty because they will know he chose to beat the undefeated Russian.
Canelo may not want to fight Bivol again after the bad experience he had last May getting schooled by him, but the fight the fans want to see & DAZN wants. If Canelo chooses to avoid Bivol and go back to fighting a group of weaker fighters that he has defeated from 2018 to 2021.
It’s clear that Canelo swayed Bivol by choosing to fight 40-year-old Gennadiy Golovkin last month on September 17th. Also, Canelo made matters worse by putting a condition on the Bivol fight by saying he must defeat Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez on November 5th.
Again, Canelo is clearly out for Ramirez to beat Bivol. The interesting thing is that if Ramirez wins, he has no chance to fight Canelo because he said he will not fight Mexican fighters.
So if Ramirez wins, Canelo is not on the hook to fight Bivol again, and he can go back to fighting the people he wants to fight, meaning we can see him trying to get back into European fighters like John Ryder.
The boxing crowd wants to see Canelo (58-2-2, 39 KOs) fight WBA heavyweight champion Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) again, and it’s one of the few fights the Mexican star has get to him who will bring in a ton of buy-per-view and new subscribers to DAZN.
Canelo can’t sell a fight with John Ryder on PPV, and it’s unlikely that DAZN would be willing to pay him big bucks to put that mismatch on their network.
DAZN knows that fans won’t want to see Canelo fight an overrated fighter from Europe in a cherry pick like everyone else between 2018 and 2021.
The fights that will bring pay-per-view on DAZN are against these guys:
- Dmitry Bivol
- David Benavidez
- Jermall Charlo
Caleb Plant can get into this category if he beats Anthony Dirrell, Benavidez, and Charlo like he says he will. But we know very well that Plant will be able to distract Benevidez & Charlo and just start calling out Canelo non-stop if he wins his fight with Dirrell on Saturday night.
Plants are not stupid. The former ‘Sweethands’ knew Charlo & Benevidez would beat him to the punch and ruin his career more than Canelo.
