By Dan Ambrose: Eddie Hearn wants to see if Dmitry Bivol can make it to 168 to challenge Canelo Alvarez for the vacant super middleweight title in his next fight.
If Bivol can safely make the 168-lb limit without getting pumped or risking his health, he will have a chance to become the undisputed champion by beating Canelo.
Hearn said Bivol’s #1 fighter on his roster, Artur Beterbiev, probably won’t be available to fight him until September of next year due to his schedule.
Unsurprisingly, Bivol (21-0, 11 KOs) won’t be waiting that long to compete again, and that’s where Canelo will come in. The two could fight in May in a rematch, giving the Mexican star a chance for revenge. his loss from last May.
“I thought Dmitry Bivol was unbelievable, and he was pound-for-pound great,” Eddie Hearn told iFL TV after Dmitry Bivol’s win over Gilberto Ramirez.
“Maybe, he wants to be without controversy, but maybe We will look at Canelo Alvarez at 168 for the undisputed,” said Hearn when reminded that Bivol wants to fight for the minority at 175 against IBF, WBC & WBO heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev.
“Maybe Dmitry Bivol can make weight. We will have to see, and we will talk to Eddy Reynoso and Saul, the boss, about who they want to fight,” said Hearn.
Canelo probably won’t be willing to face Bivol at 168 because if he loses, he won’t be the belt because he’ll be taking the undisputed middleweight championship.
Plus, if Canelo loses, it will be fine because the excuse of losing to a big man will be out the window.
If he chooses to leave the ring until September due to the rehabilitation of his left arm surgery, Bivol will be able to defend his WBA light heavyweight title against #2 WBA, #2 WBC, #4 WBO, and #12 IBF Joshua Buatsi.
Hearn promoted Buatsi, who was in attendance last Saturday night for Bivol’s fight against Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez in Abu Dhabi. It won’t be a big fight with Bivol facing Buatsi, but he will be a good plan C option if he can’t get Beterbiev or Canelo.
Buatsi will be similar to Craig Richards of Bivol, and it will not be a difficult fight. The most difficult thing for Bivol to fight Buatsi is that he will need to do it in front of his British fans in London because that is the only place he will sell.
American boxing fans generally don’t know who Buatsi is, so they won’t be out to get a fight between him and Bivol.
“Dmitry now has the freedom to make his own decisions. He’s become a big, big star, a big fighter, and we’ll see what happens next,” said Hearn.
