By Robert Segal: David Benavidez needs to exhaust every effort possible to fight Caleb Plant to help increase his chances of getting a fight with Canelo Alvarez.
Without having a big belt under his belt at 168 to entice Canelo to fight him, Benavidez (26-0, 23) will be left out in the cold, fighting unknown fighters like Jose Uzcategui, David Lemieux, and Ronald Ellis.
Matchroom boxing promoter Eddie Hearn feels that Benavidez needs to fight Plant to help his efforts to get Canelo to share the ring with him.
Hearn doesn’t understand Benvidez’s move to face former IBF 168-lb champion Jose Uzcategui in January because that fight will do nothing for him to get the Canelo fight.
Uzcategui was already beaten by Plant, which made Benavidez look ridiculous.
If this is his promoter, he must consider moving on after his contract expires.
“I saw the jab, and I thought it was a big left hook, but obviously, the fight wasn’t very good at that point,” Eddie Hearn told DAZN Boxing Sports about his ninth-round victory. Caleb Plant over Anthony Dirrell in October. 15th.
“I don’t think we can really start looking at Dirrell as a top professional at 168. Listen, he’s a world champion, a former world champion, but he won his last fight in a controversial decision.
“Caleb Plant is a great fighter. He gave Canelo a good fight. He used to lose and stop, but he was still a great fighter. For me, I can’t believe we didn’t get Spence-Crawford, but I can’t believe we can’t get Benavidez-Plant.
“Benavidez-Plant is a very good fight. Plant is coming out of a big gate, albeit against Canelo Alvarez, big numbers. He’s a great fighter, he has a great back story, and he has a great story, and Benavidez is a great fighter.
“This is the kind of fight that should be fought, and it’s a big battle for distribution. You know, if Benavidez wants to fight Canelo Alvarez, this is the kind of fight he needs to make a statement, in my opinion, to make everybody go, ‘Wow, Canelo, you have to fight Benavidez.’
“The Jose Uzcategui fight was amazing. Plant-Benavidez, same camp, same network, big fight. It should be a given,” Hearn said.
