At Ringside: Lou McLaughlin – Friday night November 4th at the Robert Treat Hotel, Newark New Jersey live boxing returns to Northern New Jersey through the efforts of Rising Star Promotions. Rising Star is the promotional company of boxer Thomas “Cornflake” LaManna. Thomas who was a rising star in sports after struggling in television shows. While still a boxer, Thomas is eyeing life after boxing as a promoter. He follows in the footsteps of Oscar De La Hoya, by changing his career as a boxer to a boxing tycoon. It’s exciting that young Thomas is bringing boxing live to the “Brick City” Newark, NJ The card has been a hit with the crowd. Card fighting also brought awareness that boxing is a dangerous sport. The first two bouts ended with the losing fighters being ejected from the ring on a stretcher. People no matter how skilled or unskilled deserve to be honored for bravery and even stepping into the ring.
In the main event round 8 at 144 lbs. Mikey “Artist” Perez 26-3-2 12KOs a hometown fighter from Newark, New Jersey, took on Juan De La Cruz Rodríguez 10-18-1 hailing from Front Royal Virginia. Perez began boxing with a successful amateur career. He won three Eastern Conference titles, the 2003 Silver Gloves championship, the 2005 Junior Olympic title, and the 2008 Golden Gloves title. The first round started where each boxer was careful. As the round went on Perez began to force Rodriquez to back off at the end of the round and finished the round with a good right hand to the head of Perez. The second round started with Rodriquez trying to establish himself. But in the middle rounds it was Perez who was dominant, although Rodriquez had his moments. The third round showed heated words, as the two fighters shook hands in anger. Rodriquez sports a left eye brand. The round ended with a great exchange. The fourth round was even exchanged However, Rodriquez’s was swollen and showed a bad sign. Perez came up short in what was decided. Both men began the fifth round of the middle of the ring with heavy wings. Rodriquez looked like a bastard. Also, it is now Perez’s right eye that is marked. The sixth started quickly again with both fighters throwing meat eaters. But Perez has been winning this fight. The eyes of both boxers show the damage done in the exchange. Rodriquez was knocked down at the end of the second round and was saved from a penalty with one minute left in the round. But the break between rounds was not enough for Rodriquez who took a knee to count 8 straight. As the seventh round began, he was falling fast, punishing the ropes and the referee stopped the contest at 1:57 for a TKO win for Mikey “The Artist” Perez
In the main event round 6 at 115 lbs. A local boxer from Newark, Anthony “Big Back” Johns 5-0 4KO fights the experienced Jenn” El Infinito “González 10-18-1 Front Royal, Virginia. Johns is the 2019 National Golden Gloves Champion in the light pole vault category. The crowd cheered loudly for Newark’s Anthony Johns. Round one started with both men slow. Both favor the jab as an offense. Midway through the round Johns began to pick up the pace. The second round saw the opposition using jabs. There’s Gonzalez’s slide. The third started with more energy. Johns’ strength was the decision in this round. The round ended with Gonzalez’s hold due to energy and backstabbing. In the fourth Gonzalez was wilting under Big Back’s onslaught. Gozalez held and turned his back, which caused the referee to stop the contest at 1:52 of the second.
Light weight light weight Kurt Scoby 10-0 8K0s of Brooklyn NY in an 8 round contest contested at 142 lbs. and veteran Raymundo “Ruso” Rios Cardiel 4-10-2 3KO from Durango Mexico. The first few seconds were filled with frustration between the fighters. Then the much huskier Scoby used the greater strength of his body to chase Cardiel around the ring. Scoby was too strong for his Mexican opponent. The second round again saw Scoby use his strength to beat Cardiel to stop 8. The referee chose to stop the one-sided affair at 2:06 for a TKO to keep Kurt Scoby undefeated.
John McDonagh of Queens, New York made his debut against John Bailey 0-2-0 of Kalamazoo, Michigan in the 4th round scheduled at 168 lbs. Interesting side McDonagh, who is the last son of McDonagh to capture the attention of Seamus McDonagh. On June 1, 1990, Seamus fought WBC Continental Americas Champion Evander Holyfield but lost by TKO in the fourth round.
Bailey came out swinging with long hands but was kicked out in the penalty corner and the referee stopped the fight by TKO at 1:02 of the first. John McDonagh won his first game in convincing fashion.
I’m 140 lbs. in the junior welterweight division Jamir Cope undefeated at 3-0 2KO from nearby Teaneck, NJ fight Carlos Nunez 0-3-1 of New York in a 4-round fight. Cope works part-time as a kindergarten teacher at KIPP SPARK Academy in Newark, N.J. Both fighters start off with a flurry of back jabs. Cope has the edge in speed and accuracy with Nunez missing with a wild right. The second he countered with a hard jab connecting on a left hook to the body. At the end of the game, referee Harvey Dock asked Nunez if he was okay. The third saw more of the same with Cope leading the charge. The fourth round has more of the same. The fight ended with a unanimous decision with scores of 40-36 on all three score cards of the judges.
He fought at 164 lbs. in the fourth round match James Ibrahim 2-0 2KO of Queens, New York beat Elijah Hasman 0-2-0 from Detroit, Michigan. The first round saw Ibrahim use an effective jab to establish a connection. It was a super combination of the head that caused Hasman to punch the referee and stop the fight. Hasman was given oxygen in his chair and was the second fighter in a row to be taken out by a layup.
In 6 rounds at 164 lbs. Gian Garrido of Queens New York posted a 7-0 5KO undefeated record against Hansen Castillo 3-6-1 3 OR from Orlando, Florida. The first round made all the opponents start enjoying each other. Then Garrido opened up effectively working the body with vicious combinations. Mid round Castillo backs up with a drop rope attempt. The second round started with Castillo stuck on the ropes that lowered his hands from the brutal attack. With this selection, Garrido included a personal attachment. The uppercut is very effective as Castillo bends at the waist from the attack. The third saw Castillo trying to bring the action to the center of the ring only to be sent back to the ropes taking more punishment. At the end of the round, Castillo was tired and went back to his corner. The fourth saw more of the same with Castillo pinning on the ropes. The fifth had Garrido using inside and outside tactics eventually forcing Castillo to the ropes. In the sixth round the fighter from Florida suffered a huge penalty and sank on the drawing that required medical attention at the second point of 50 and was taken from the ring on a stretcher.
In the first round of 4 rounds of the evening two boxers had their first bout at 142 lbs. Gabriel Gerena from Piscataway, New Jersey took on Brodyx Gilman 0-1 from Kalamazoo, Michigan. Gerena from New Jersey is the favorite. Short Gerena comes out quick and throws combinations to Gilman’s head. Gilman went down early from Gerena’s attack. The referee gave him an 8 count but said he couldn’t continue. The stoppage was at 1:11 of the first round giving Gabriel Gerena his first win as a pro.
In the end, it was an entertaining fight card. By the sound of the crowd, they really enjoyed the show. It also gives young and up-and-coming fighters a platform to be exposed to fans.
