In the Main Event, IBF Fly Champ Sunny “Showtime” Edwards, 19-0 (4), #111 ¼, of Croydon, London, UK, defeated former IBF Light Fly Champion Felix “El Gemelo” Alvarado, 38-3 (33 ) ), #111, of Managua, NIC, over 12 close rounds.
In the first round, it was good with Alvarado pressing Edwards, who considered the former champion behind him. In the second round, Edwards continued to attack.
Seconds before the bell, Edwards rocked Alvarado with a big right uppercut to the liver. In the third round, Alvarado had the power to drive Edwards into the corner several times, taking the round.
In the third through the sixth round, Alvarado did not stop coming forward, making the fight interesting and close to the champion Edwards. In the seventh round, Alvarado went good to the body, had a good round.
In the eighth and a half rounds, Edwards landed his best punch to date, a right hand on Alvarado’s head knocking him back. In the second half of the round, it was all Alvarado.
In the ninth round, it was all Alvarado had Edwards on the ropes at the bell. In the tenth and eleventh round, Edwards led the first half but disappeared in the second half of the fight.
With the fight on the line in the twelfth and final round, Alvarado fought out of frustration, knowing that getting a decision in Britain was slim; he’s throwing punches as Edwards is having his best round against Alvarado, who is walking in with punches. The referee was Steve Gray.
Scores were 116-112 and 115-113 twice, according to the author.
In the semi-finals, WBA Inter-Continental Super Bantamweight Champion Jack Bateson 17-1 (4), #120 ½, of Leeds, Yorkshire, UK, was stopped by Southpaw Shabaz “Maverick” Masoud, 11-0 ( 4), #121 ¾, of Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, UK, at 2:00 in the twelfth and final round.
In the first two rounds they exchanged winners. Bateson goes from orthodox to southpaw against southpaw Masoud. In the third and fourth round, Masoud scored a good shot against Bateson. In the fifth round, with only one minute remaining, Masoud rocked Bateson with a kick to the side of the goal. Bateson’s balance ended, and he came down on his head, an easy target for Masoud to punch.
In the sixth, Bateson put Masoud on the ropes for the first time. At the end of the first minute, Masoud rocked Bateson with a left jab.
In the last minute of the seventh round, Bateson finally landed a punch to the body. Overall, Masoud, on defense, has long hands, which makes it harder for Bateson to land anywhere but the body.
In the ninth round, Masoud’s body shots were having an effect on Bateson, and then he went to the head and cut Bateson on the bridge of his nose in the middle. The cut seemed to inspire Bateson in the second half of the round. In the final seconds of the tenth round, a combination from Masoud hurt Bateson backing him up several steps.
In the eleventh round, in the last minute, Masoud scored a goal against Bateson. In the twelfth and final half way round, Masoud dropped Bateson with several chinlocks for an 8 count.
In the second right on the side of the head from Masoud and Bateson down for the second time. Masoud jumped all over Bateson without stopping as referee Howard Foster stopped him. Masoud went on to win the next British title.
2021 Olympic Gold Medalists Hebert Conceicao, 3-0 (1), #163, of Salvador, Bahia, BRZ, defeated Gideon “Jonas” Onyenani, 4-2 (1), #162 ½, of Chatham, Kent, UK, over six rounds.
In the first three rounds, Conceicao controlled the majority of the fight with an effective jab. In the fifth round, the pace picked up, where Conceicao continued to dominate Onyenani. In the sixth and final round, Conceicao landed a left hook from Onyenani in the middle of the round. Both boxers were cautioned for foul play by referee Howard Foster.
