Anthony Joshua explains why the fight with Tyson Fury fell apart. The Watford powerhouse told a group of reporters that the upcoming fight in Britain needed more time to complete, and Fury’s promise to end the fight.
‘AJ’ is expected to face Fury on December 3 at the Principality Stadium. However, at the eleventh hour, communication broke out between the two parties. In the course of the negotiations, Fury repeatedly put the deadline for the contract to be signed and stated that the fight was put off several times.
According to Joshua, these self-imposed deadlines caused the fight to fail as Fury was impatient with the negotiations.
“It’s not an idea, really. The deadline hasn’t been met,” Joshua said. “That’s it. In simple terms, there is no time limit. Jairar just wants to fight, he wants to fight on a certain date. Half of it is right.
“He doesn’t have a belt, he doesn’t have anything that I need, and there will never be a fight between me and him,” Fury said.
“Full stop. There are too many conflicts. I will not deal with the situation again, they are difficult to deal with, the fight did not happen. The reason why I believe is that they never wanted to happen, and they never did no, any intention of that happening.
“The first week [of negotiations] I believe he is interested in the fight and then he realizes that this is a very difficult task and he gets a word from his people himself. If it wasn’t for that, he would be fighting instead of Derek. But he’s not and that’s it.”
Fury will now face Derek Chisora for the third time on the same day at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Fury defeated Chisora in their last two fights in 2011 and 2014.
