By Charles Brown: Anthony Joshua has hinted that he will work with a new trainer next year instead of sticking with Robert Garcia for another fight after losing to Oleksandr Usyk in his second bout.
AJ said he told Robert that he wanted to be a “Free spirit,” which could be seen as a code meaning that he is dumping the Oxnard, California coach in favor of another, yet to be determined.
You can’t blame Joshua for looking for new blood to help him revive his career because things are in dire straits right now. Abandoning Garcia for a different coach could be the answer Joshua is looking for to right the sinking ship.
Goodness knows, things are looking pretty good for AJ at the moment, and it would be foolish to stick with Robert, hoping he can fix the holes in his ship.
Joshua (24-3, 22 KOs) is currently on a losing streak and appears to be hitting the panic button by considering going with a different trainer to turn things around. We have seen the wonders a new trainer has done for Tyson Fury’s career.
If Joshua finds the right guy, he can achieve similar results and reclaim his #1 heavyweight title in the division.
“As for Robert Garcia, I have a lot of respect for him; He is a good person and very trained. Would I work with him again? Yes, I can,” Anthony Joshua told Sporting News when asked about his trainer’s attitude for his next fight.
“What I said Robert and his team and I want to be a free spirit. I locked myself for eleven years with one coach, and now I feel like I want to learn as much as possible.
“Honestly, it’s not about the coach; It’s about the fighter, what he has here [brain]. I feel like I’m in a position where I can work with anyone. So who knows what will happen next year? said Joshua.
It is important for a fighter to have a great trainer because of this ‘dirty inside, dirty.’ If you have a coach, who gives you useless training advice, it won’t fix things.
“He will,” Joshua said when asked if a fight between him and Deontay Wilder would happen. “Maybe, yes.” [fighting Wilder in 2023]. Maybe we will come back to Abu Dhabi,” said Joshua.
