GLENDALE, Arizona – Antonio Nieves couldn’t handle the pressure of Alexandro Santiago this time.
Santiago chased Nieves for most of Saturday night’s bantamweight bout, until Nieves refused to answer the bell in the eighth round on the Jake Paul-Anderson Silva credit card at Desert Diamond Arena. Santiago’s stoppage against them came six years after they drew in 10 rounds.
Tijuana’s Santiago (27-3-5, 14 KOs) is 11-1 since splitting the 12th round with Philippines’ Jerwin Ancajas (33-3-2, 22 KOs), who was the IBF junior bantamweight champion when they fight. in September 2018. Santiago’s only loss during that stretch was a 10-round, dominant-decision defeat to then-unbeaten Gary Antonio Russell (19-1, 12 KOs) last November 27.
Cleveland’s Nieves (20-4-2, 11 KOs) lost by technical knockout for the second time in 11 years pro career. Only Japanese knockout artist Naoya Inoue (23-0, 20 KOs) stopped Nieves in the distance before Saturday night.
Nieves and Santiago fought to the 10th round in August 2016. Their first fight was broadcast as part of Showtime’s upcoming series, “ShoBox: The New Generation.
Not much was done in the sixth round, but Santiago continued to attack during the middle minutes of the seventh round. He caused Nieves to back off when he let his hand go, but Santiago didn’t hurt his opponent.
Santiago moved Nieves into the ropes and landed punches to the head and body halfway through the fifth round.
Santiago connects with a left uppercut and then a jab as Nieves backs away towards the end of the fourth round which is not worked.
Less than a minute into the third round, Santiago backed Nieves into the ropes and landed a combination to the body before connecting with a right hand to the head.
After a first round in which neither fighter got a clean break, Santiago defeated Nieves with a right hand that landed midway through the second round.
