The end of the year has many different meanings — the arrival of colder weather, Thanksgiving and the return of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” In the K-pop world, however, it represents one thing: the arrival of awards season.
If you’re new to the South Korean music industry, this time of year can be overwhelming with all its voting sprees, similar acronyms (come on, what’s the difference between Mama and MMA?), and fanwar. With that in mind, I’ve broken down the most popular shows for your attention in the following months. Deleted:
Mellon Music Awards (MMA)
A major South Korean music event, the Mellon Music Awards (MMA) is organized annually by the popular Korean music platform Mellon, and the award categories range from Daesang (Grand Prize). Artist of the Year awards focus on genre, performance and more. This year’s contestants include names like IU, BTS, TXT, Chungha, CL, and rookies SINCE and STAYC, ranked based on a popular voting system.
The 14th season of MMA will be held 26 November at the Sky Dome in Seoul and will take place offline for the first time in two years after being presented online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It can usually be found on Melon’s official website and 1theK’s YouTube channel.
Mama (MNET Asian Music Awards)
Home to many iconic moments in K-pop history — like Jackson Wang’s shocking reaction meme and BTS’ and Block B’s “Battle” performance — the MAMA Awards is recognized as one of the industry’s biggest shows.
Also known as the Mnet Asian Music Awards, the show awards accolades such as Best New Artist, Best Dance Performance and four traditional Daesang (grand prizes) through online voting by fans. In this year’s edition, Mama is going to be 29 and 30 November at the Kyocera Dome in Osaka, Japan. But don’t worry: the awards show will be streamed on YouTube, so you can catch BTS, TWICE, Blackpink and all the other nominees live.
Asia Artistes Awards (AAA)
In 2022, the Asian Artist Awards (AAA) will continue December 13in Japan, and will include a star-studded lineup featuring fourth generation icons such as Seventeen, The Boys, Stray Kids and IVE, ITZY, and New Jeans.
Honoring the music and television industries across Asia, the event first started in 2006 and will host its sixth edition this year. The Asia Artist Awards is currently one of the most prestigious and anticipated awards among fans, and has been won by popular artists such as BTS, EXO and NCT in the past. The event will begin at 7 pm KST and will be streamed via StarNews’ V Live.
Goon Chart Music Awards
Based on Gaon music charts — similar to a South Korean music chart The Billboard Hot 100 — Gaon Chart Music Awards honors the act with the best commercial performance of the year.
Divided into digital music and physical album categories, the event is usually held in January and this year, this most awaited show will host its 12th edition. As of yet, neither the lineup nor the nominees have been announced, so expectations are high as to who the contestants will be who will own the music landscape in 2022.
Golden Disc Award (GDA)
Nicknamed the “Korean Grammy”, the Golden Disc Award is a major music award that recognizes achievements in the domestic industry. First held in 1986, the event had PSY, Super Junior, and BTS among its winners and aims to celebrate popular culture and creativity with a bonanza. (Main Award) and two Daesang, Album of the Year and Digital Song of the Year trophies.
Although the date for the 37th edition has not been announced, the show usually airs in January. The Bonsang and Daesang criteria are based on expert evaluation and sales, but some categories rely on popular votes, such as the Most Popular Artist Award.
Seoul Music Awards (SMA)
The Seoul Music Awards is an annual event that celebrates excellence in music. Honoring its winners based on music sales, popular vote and judges’ opinions, the event was first held in 1990 and included EXO and BTS as the most awarded artists, with 23 awards each.
In this event, Daesang is only awarded for a musical act (unlike Mama, for example), so it’s safe to say that the stakes are pretty high. Awards include the Popularity Award, determined by domestic audience votes, and the K-Wave Special Award, determined by overseas fans.
There is no date for its 32nd edition yet, but it is speculated that it will be set in early 2023.
Korean Music Awards
Both mainstream and underground artists participated in the Korean Music Awards as nominees. Recognizing various genres, the award is one of the most prestigious in the country and awards it based on the recommendations of a panel of judges.
First held in 2004, the award has had 19 events so far and is usually set in February and March, celebrating the achievements and creations of the past year. The event features around 20 categories, spanning grand prizes and genre trophies in pop, folk and hip hop.
