Nashville, Tenn. (WTVF) — For the first time since 2019, the Nashville Music Awards returned to an in-person celebration and people were excited to once again celebrate songwriters and publishers.

“Superstars wouldn’t be superstars without the songwriters behind the songs, and so I think it’s great that the SESAC and BMI and ASCAP awards honor just the songwriters. I always love being here,” Jennifer Wayne, songwriter and Runway June band member, said.

Blanco Brown and Lee Brice took the stage to kick off the event.

A night of honoring singers and songwriters that many have missed.

“We’re excited to be back, excited to have everyone here. It’s going to be a great night,” Dawson Anderson said.

The ASCAP Awards will follow on Monday, then the BMI Awards on Tuesday, all leading up to the 56th annual CMA Awards show.

A show CMA’s executive producer, Robert Deaton, said will feature plenty of Nashville talent and special tributes.

“When we can, we can spotlight people in Nashville, I think that’s a really cool thing to do. And then Loretta was a situation where she had an incredibly close relationship with both of us, but everybody did. And you know, she’s kind of was,” Dayton said.

Honoring diversity is also a priority for the ritual this year.

“Under this umbrella of country music, all these different types of country music, and so that’s what we want to be able to show, that’s what we want to be able to show America, that’s what country music is today and that’s what it looks like,” Dayton said.

The CMT Awards announced earlier this week that they will be moving to Austin in 2023. Asked if the CMA would follow suit, CEO Sarah Traherne had this to say.

“So the CMAs went to New York in 2005 and that was a big step for us. It was a big celebration. When we came back to Nashville, Robert brought the show here to the Bridgestone Arena. So I don’t think we’ll ever. Leave permanently. I could see us leaving for a year or two if the opportunity ever presented itself,” Treherne said.
