For the second year in a row LAB cemented its place as one of New Zealand’s best bands, sweeping the Aotearoa Music Awards on Wednesday with four Tūī.

Nominated for a total of six awards, Bay of Plenty 5-piece Take Home Album of the Year (Te Pukemi o te Tau) LAB V Released in 2021, Single of the Year (te waiata tōtahi o te tau) Mr Reggae, Best Group (Te Rupu Toa ) and Best Roots Artist (Te Kaipuro Niteke Toa).

The group’s big win on Wednesday evening matched LAB’s 2021 success, which saw them collect four Tūīs, including Album of the Year and Single of the Year.

Also a big winner in 2022 is country artist Tami Nielsen, known for her 2020 hit You Were Mine. The singer beat out finalists Lorde, Reb Fountain and Rob Ruha to win Best Solo Artist (Kaipuro Takitahi Toa), becoming the first female artist to win the category since Bick Runga in 2006.

Neilson also won two other awards this year for Best Country Artist (Te Kaipuro Toawenua Toa) and Best Producer (Tekaiwakaputa) for his latest album Kingmaker.

Fresh from his big win at the 2022 Silver Scroll Awards in October, viral sensation Rob Ruha, who led a total of six nominations, was celebrated on Wednesday as Best Soul/RnB Artist (te kaipuroro awetoa) for Conservation Album.

The popular Maori artist was also recognized with Ka Hau for Waita 35. The song saw massive popularity on TikTok in 2021 and won Te Mangai Paho Mana Reo Tui.

In the group’s second win of the evening, Ka Hao won Best Maori Artist (Te Mangai Paho te Kaipuro Maori Toa) for the record Ka Hao: One Tira, One Voice.

Behind the scenes, Chelsea Jade Metcalf was recognized for Best Album Artwork (Te Toi Atata Pukemi Toa) for the cover art on her record Soft Spot, and Joel Kefali and pop megastar Lorde accepted the award for Best Video Content (Te Kiko Pooro Atata Toa).
