BTS, who are preparing to release a new album next month, plan to skip the Billboard Music Awards this year due to their packed schedule. This comes despite making history by receiving the most number of nominations by a K-pop group at the K-Pop Group Awards Show. ARMY may not have been able to see a performance by the band at the BBMAs, but they’re still less than happy about it. BTS members RM, Suga, V, Jin, Jimin, J-Hope and Jungkook were in Las Vegas last month for their four days of stage dancing. However, they decided not to return to the city this month for BBMAs on May 15.

According to Allkpop, this is because the band is currently focusing on their new album Proof, which will be released on June 10. They will not attend any award show till then and will give their acceptance speech with a video if they win

Fans of the K-pop group, collectively known as ARMY, supported their decision and also said they were happy with it. In BTS’s last Billboard interview, ARMY was accused of indirectly manipulating the charts by mass buying their songs. This comes after their English song Butter, released in May 2021, became the longest-ranking number 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart after spending 10 weeks at the top.

In response, RM defended ARMY and suggested that it was up to Billboard to change the rules and rank based on streaming. Billboard later changed their digital sales rules, making it harder for fans to buy their favorite artists’ music and support them, further angering Army.

BTS fans are still excited about it on Billboard. One wrote on Twitter, “Honestly glad to hear they decided not to attend this year. Anyway their comeback is more important than the BBMAs,” while another commented, “I’m so glad they’re not attending…BBMA that Not getting the effect it wanted..but my alter ego is thinking about our performance.” A third wrote, “I support their decision. Literally after what BB is doing, they don’t deserve BTS.”

In 2017, BTS became the first K-pop group to be nominated for and win a Billboard Award and have won an award every year since. This year, the band has been nominated seven times in six categories for their songs Butter and Permission to Dance at the Billboard Music Awards 2022.

They were nominated in the categories of Top Duo/Group, Top Song Sales Artist, Top Billboard Global (US) Artist, Top Selling Song (for which they were nominated twice), Top Billboard Global (US Exclusive) Song and Top Rock Song (for which they were nominated for “My Universe” shared with Coldplay). It marks the highest number of nominations received by any team or duo in any given year.
