MAMA Awards, the annual K-pop celebration hosted by CJ ENM, is taking another leap in its efforts to evolve into a global K-pop festival.

Ahead of the 2022 MAMA Awards to be held at the end of the month in Japan, a global press conference about the event was held on Wednesday at the CJ ENM studio in Sangam-dong, western Seoul.

A lineup of special performers for this year’s event was also revealed during the conference, including BTS’s J-Hope.

This year marks the first time the event is being held under its newly revised name, the Mama Awards. In August, CJ ENM announced the rebranding of the Mnet Asian Music Awards to the MAMA Awards to demonstrate its new goal to take the event beyond the Asian realm to the wider world.

“With K-pop’s growing influence in the global community, we wondered if the awards could be limited to Asia,” said Kim Hyun-soo, head of music content at CJ ENM.

Kim added that the company plans to take the award to the United States within three years.

“I announced our new challenge to take the MAMA Awards to the US last year. We are currently planning to launch an offline event in the US within three years,” said Kim, adding that the country is among the top five regions from which fans are drawn in the fan-voted category of the awards. took part

Under the slogan “We Are K-Pop”, the 2022 MAMA Awards will be held on November 29-30 at the Kyocera Dome in Osaka, Japan. The event will also be streamed live through online platforms.

The first day will be dedicated to global fans of K-pop and the top 10 fan-voted groups will be named worldwide. General category winners will be announced on the second night. This is the first two-day event being held.

The show will be hosted by K-pop singer Jeon Somi on the first night and actor Park Bo-gum on the following day. This is the first time Jeon is hosting a major music award show. The park, which previously hosted in 2018 and 2019, is returning for a third time.

The special lineup of performers has been revealed, and fronting the list was BTS’s J-Hope, who made his solo debut this year with the album “Jack in the Box.”

“J-Hope will be the first from BTS to release a solo performance on a TV broadcast. All the Mama performances have become legends, and J-Hope is preparing to write history as well,” said Yoon Shin-hye, head producer of CJ NM, adding that J-Hope’s performance will be titled “I’m Hoping For You.”

A huge collaboration of five big-name rookie girl groups – Ive, Le Sserafim, NewJeans, NMIXX and Kep1er – will also be a highlight of the awards show. Organizers said 32 members of five bands will take the stage together.

Never-before-seen collaborations, including Stray Kids’ production trio 3Racha, Oscar-winning film “Parasite” music director Jung Jae-il and legendary hip-hop artist Tiger JK, as well as another K-pop act ( G) I -dle and the rock band Jaurim, are also working.

“We wanted to show performances that were only possible at Mama. We thought about what kind of performance created through collaboration between different artists can inspire the audience and the public. Our initiative is to show everyone united through music regardless of boundaries, generations and styles,” Yoon explained.

The lineup of previously announced performers includes Cara, Hyelyn, Forestella, BB, NMIXX, Le Seraphim and the crew of Mnet’s popular “Street Man Fighter” on day one, and Zico, Lim Yong-woong, (G)I-dle, on day two. NiziU, INI and NewJeans.

The event is held every year in Japan, Singapore and other places in Southeast Asia. Hong Kong, and has become Asia’s biggest music award show.
