As the Billboard Music Awards approach (they’re this Sunday night, May 15), it’s time to discuss which artists will take home the night’s biggest categories: Top Male Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Duo/Group and Top All-Inclusive Artist.
Top Male Artist
will be encountered within this section drake And the weekend. The former topped Billboard’s year-end Top Male Artists list, giving him a clear advantage. However, the deadline for the Billboard Music Awards was in March, a few months after the end of the year charts, which could make a difference. Not only has The Weeknd outlived Drake, he also dropped a brand new album in 2022. With all that said, don’t begrudge a weekend here, especially considering he’s leading the nominations this year and still has two major albums in rotation (plus a greatest hits collection, “The Highlights,” which is a regular top 10 ). None of these artists are strangers to the award, with Drake winning in 2017 and 2019, while The Weeknd claimed the win here last year.
Top female artists
You can count on Olivia Rodrigo Taking this one home. The superstar had a banner year in 2021 with the success of his number one album “Sour” and hit singles like “Good 4 You,” “Deja Vu,” “Driver’s License,” and “Traitor.” “Talk” remains a consistent seller and remains in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 a year after its release. Rodrigo may face some competition from Taylor Swift, who has been very successful in the past few months with the release of “Red (Taylor’s Version)”. But while “Red” was big, “Sour” is ahead of it on the charts and has been for some time, so Rodrigo can keep it safely in the bag.
Top Duo/Group
This is another category where the difference between the year-end cutoff and the BBMAs cutoff can affect the winner. BTS topped the year-end charts for the top duo/group, likely due to the success of their number one hit “Butter” as well as the continued success of their album “BE”. however, glass creature was second on that list, and has since experienced even more success with “Heat Waves,” which topped the chart earlier this year and is still in the top five as of this writing. So, the question may be whether the resurgence of “Heat Wave” has given the group enough chart points to overtake BTS. I would cautiously predict an upset here and bet on Glass Animals to win. BTS will be fine if they lose this award; They have already won it in 2019 and 2021.

While it’s really anyone’s game, it’s probably going to come down to Drake vs. Olivia Rodrigo vs. The Weeknd. Whoever wins Best Male Artist will face off against Rodrigo here, and all three artists make a good case for themselves. Drake’s success with “Certified Lover Boy” was massive (charting in its opening week nine song in the Top 10), but The Weeknd and Rodrigo seem to have stayed in the public consciousness longer with their records. On the year-end chart, Drake is first and Rodrigo and The Weeknd are second and third, respectively. To shake things up, I’ll go ahead and predict a Rodrigo win here; The first few months of the year could really help him get the jump on Drake. And, after all, when you think of 2021, you think of Olivia Rodrigo.
