For the second year in a row, Princeton review today named Rowan University’s undergraduate entrepreneurship program among the top 50 in the United States.
Released in collaboration with Businessman magazine, study not only including Rowan’s program in its Best 50 ranking, boosted the University’s national rankings six places to #44 and named it #7 in the Northeast.
Rohrer College of Business Dean Sue Lehrman said the latest ranking by Princeton reviewthat comes in the middle of 50 collegesth the anniversary celebration, is significant because it underscores a commitment to embracing entrepreneurship as a means of self-improvement and self-control.
“The concept of entrepreneurship is very powerful and empowering,” said Lehrman. “Whether one is thinking about a venture capital-backed technology startup or a corner barber shop, the idea of taking a chance and executing one’s vision is appealing. It is also, for many, within reach, especially if students take advantage of the many opportunities available from the Rowan Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.”
Under President Rowan Ali A. Houshmand, who in 2022-23 celebrates 10th years leading the University, the institution is becoming more entrepreneurial across classrooms and colleges. In 2014, he launched the Rowan Innovation Venture Fund with $5 million, a fund which, since then, has spawned 14 regional and South Jersey-based startups, many of which were launched by University students and faculty. This summer the fund grew to $25 million.
A long-standing role in building an entrepreneurial mindset across all Rowan schools and colleges, RCB offers a variety of entrepreneurship degree and certificate programs including a BS degree, a minor, two MBA concentrations, three graduate certificates, and an undergraduate certificate. A second MBA concentration and certificate was launched this year with a focus on the commercialization of cannabis. RCB also offers, in partnership with the Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering, a BS in engineering entrepreneurship.
Rowan in 2022 also launched a School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship within RCB, the first of its kind in New Jersey and one of very few university-based schools of its kind in the country.
The college’s long-running “Think Like an Entrepreneur” summer academy this year awards 1000th free college credit for high school students and this fall RCB started a program in Camden to help interested residents start their own businesses. The initiative, which developed from RCB research, is in line with the United Nations’ goal of eliminating poverty.
Dr. Eric Liguori, who heads the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, says the many ways Rowan and RCB embrace and promote new business and ownership are building critical mass, both in practice and public awareness.
And, as Rowan pushed forward in its goal of achieving Carnegie-classified R1 research university status, it helped raise the University’s growing profile.
“All of our efforts, from high school outreach to degree and certificate programs to the Innovation Fund to connected community support, and they make an impact,” said Liguori. “Ultimately, our goal as business educators is to help make South Jersey a better and more prosperous place to live, but also to be recognized by respected organizations like Princeton review.”
