Shawn Porter, the former welterweight title holder proved to be the one to hurt Oleksandr Usyk when the pair met in the ring.
The talented and retired discuss his huge victory over the current heavyweight champion.
“Showtime” reveals all on the Porter Way Podcast about his impressive win at 165 pounds during his fan run.
Porter also stated that he managed to throw Usyk to the end of the fight in 2006, a fact that seems incomprehensible in 2022.
How did Shawn Porter beat Oleksandr Usyk?
When asked, “How did you beat Usyk in the fans?” – Shawn Porter replied: “[It was an] A wonderful fight.
“So Keith Thurman and I, along with a few others. There were eleven guys on the team. I don’t remember who was there.
“We came to Ukraine to play the USA vs Ukraine game, which is outside of Chicago. Keith is 152 years old and I am 165 years old. [pounds].
“So I think we have 101, 106, 112, 118, 125 [weight classes]. Everybody’s coming back to the locker room, they’re coming back, losing.
“So Keith and I are in the locker room warming up. We looked at each other and said that we will not go home with a loss.
“That’s why he went out there and did his thing, and I went out to Usyk. He’s tall, he’s 165, a southpaw, and at that time, we fought on a point-by-point basis.
“Three of the five judges put pressure on you in one second to win the fight. In the first round I won by two points. The second round was tied. Then I entered the third round, and I was up by one point.
“When we entered the last round, the assistant coach grabbed my leg before I got off the chair, and he said if you line up this player and grab him with your right hand, you will get him.
Usyk was shocked
“We do four rounds of two minutes, so this is the fourth round. I caught him with right hands for the last two minutes and less than a minute into that round. He took a few steps back, enough for me to know he was hurt.
“I jumped on him and continued boxing. I ended up winning the fight by four points.”
Porter added on his feelings after the match: “I remember when my arm was lifted, it was a close fight until the end.
“I remember thinking to myself. I had this success. It’s not a fight just because he came to America. I actually had this success.
“It was a close fight, but it was a fair decision.”
On whether or not Usyk has continued to walk the line as he dominated the cruiserweight division and moved up to heavyweight, the American said:
“I was in Ukraine in 2018, and it was all love. People were talking about this war, and I forgot all about it.”
Heavy weight
Concluding on whether he would accept Usyk now, Porter said: “He’s two hundred pounds now, so no.
“But if there’s an issue that comes up, yeah, I’ll get in the ring with him.
“My dad has been making me fight heavyweights since I was ten years old, so that’s it.”
Turning professional two years after Usyk’s victory, Porter has enjoyed a great career at the top level, which is no surprise.
He won the IBF title at 147 pounds in 2014. Porter followed it up with the WBC title in 2018.
His last fight took place in Las Vegas in November. So far, Porter has resisted the urge to come back for the 37th pro outing.
Shawn Porter’s record read 31-4-1 after his loss to Terence Crawford last November.
