By Dan Ambrose: In a fight between former middleweight champions, Caleb ‘Sweethands’ Plant and David Benavidez will fight in March in the WBC 168-lb final to force a decision against champion Saul Canelo Alvarez.

The WBC announced earlier today at their convention in Mexico that former IBF 168-lb champion ‘Sweethands’ Shuka (22-1, 13 KOs) and former two-time WBC champion Benavidez (26-0, 23 KOs) will meet in March to eliminate the title.

We don’t know yet if the undisputed 168-lb champion Canelo will be willing to fight the winner of Plant-Benavidez, especially if Benavidez is the one who comes out of this fight as the winner .

The March fight schedule will give Plant, 30, more time to work on his power game to give Benavidez a tough fight because he’s able to stand up to him to get a shot at winning.

All the speed that Plant did in his last fight against Anthony Dirrell will not work against Benavidez because he cut the ring so well, and he will force Sweethands to switch whether he wants to or not.

“Caleb is a great boxer when he wants to box. He has great energy and he wants to stay on his punches,” said Nonito Donaire to ESNEWS while reacting to the Caleb Plant vs. David Benavidez fight.

Donaire continued about the 30-year-old Plant, “If he can put that power and that skill, he’s going to be hard to beat.” “But if Benavidez does what he does with the size and pressure and all those things, we know that we’ve seen Caleb bend and fold when he’s faced with pressure.

“So in the end, it’s really the person who makes their style that wins this battle.

“It’s hard because Benavidez is a big guy, and it’s really hard when you get hit once or twice, and somebody goes out,” Donaire said when asked how Benavidez would fare against Canelo in a fight.

“What [Dmitry] Bivol is very good [against Canelo] a secret was hidden from him and he shot him. Benavidez is going to do the same thing, but you don’t know until they get in there.

“I think Benavidez has a great chance still considering, and Canelo, you can never count him out in his weight class with his power,” said Donaire.

“The WBC says the David Benavidez vs. Caleb ‘Sweethands’ Plant fight will take place in March, and is offering a mandatory 154 fight between Sebastian Fundora and Tony Harrison for March,” says Lance Pugmire’s Twitter.
