By Brian Webber: Bob Arum says Emanuel Navarette and Oscar Valdez have agreed to fight in 2023. The fight could be on February 3rd.
The main promoter of Top Rank Arum said that they are still trying to find a place to fight, but the two fighters agreed to the fight.
WBO featherweight champion Navarrette (36-1, 30 KOs) will defend his belt after recently defeating former two-division world champion Valdez (30-1, 23 KOs).
Valdez, 31, lost his WBO featherweight title to WBC champion Shakur Stevenson last April via a 12-round decision. It’s a tough fight for Valdez on paper, but he’s already proven himself. himself that he can beat sluggers in the past with his wins over Scott Quigg and Miguel Berchelt.
Oscar will need to drop some weight to face Navarrette at 126, which shouldn’t be too much of a problem as he only needs to lose four pounds.
It’s brave of Valdez to take on the dangerous Navarrette, as he is arguably the best fighter in the featherweight division. Valdez has taken a tough road over the past two years, fighting the following men:
- Shakur Stevenson
- Robson Conceicao
- Miguel Berchelt is a man on the moon
“I think both fighters agreed to fight each other. The question is, where is it,” Bob Arum told Fighthype about Oscar Valdez and Emanuel Navarrete agreeing to fight on February 3rd.
“Brad Jacobs of Top Rank is talking to the Mexican team about the possibility of doing it in Mexico City or, if not, Los Angeles or Phoenix, but this fight will definitely happen.
“It’s really something. These people, they don’t mess around. A lot of punches will be thrown. reminds me of the old Morales-Barrera days.
“He is a hero. Oscar, everyone knows what a great person he is, and how good he is at boxing. He is also a great fighter, a true warrior.
“So a real hero wants to be tested, and Valdez wants to be tested, and who better than Navarrete to test him,” Arum said.
Navarrete hasn’t faced anyone with Valdez’s talent, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he loses. The best people Navarrette has faced so far Isaac Dogboe x 2, Christopher Diaz, and Joet Gonzalez.
With the continued weakness of Navarrete, he may not be able to resist a talent like Valdez because it is a big step in the league.
