By Jack Tiernan: John Ryder can help his title chances against middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez by defeating Zach Parker on November 26 in their interim WBO 168-lb title fight at the O2 Arena in London.
Ryder (31-5, 17 KOs) could make a lot of money if he can beat Parker (22-0, 16 KOs) and possibly be taken down by Canelo. Matchroom Boxing promotes both fighters, which makes things easier for Ryder to be Canelo’s pick.
It will be difficult for Ryder to beat Parker because he is in the prime of his career, powerful and young at 28 years old.
Ryder’s recent upset over 35-year-old Danny Jacobs comes against a fighter who isn’t the spring chicken he was years ago when he gave Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez everything they could handle.
Canelo said last Wednesday that he will campaign next May to test his surgically repaired left hand before challenging WBA’s Dmitry Bivol in September.
“I don’t know. I don’t want to focus on that. I want to focus on this fight and focus on Zach Parker,” John Ryder told iFL TV when asked if he believes the winner of his fight with Zach Parker will be his next opponent for middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez next May.
It’s a good thing Ryder doesn’t think he’s going to get a Canelo fight because he might not, and he can’t ignore Parker for a second because he’s a very dangerous opponent.
Ryder has experience coming his way, but he’s still facing a man with two hands who is firing on all eight cylinders at this stage of his career.
“I read that he obviously wants to fight Bivol, but he’s going to have to fight in May,” Ryder said. “It could be an obligation of the IBF. I’m sure he has mandatory lines to take care of, so he has to prioritize them. So if he wants to do it for the IBF, I’m sure he’ll do it.
“He wants to hold all the rocks and not fight for two weights or anything at the same time, so who knows? But I’m very focused on fighting Zach Parker and beating Zach Parker, and we have a good a title we will go to defend against other good fighters.
“Benavidez and Plant, they are fighting for a while [WBC super middleweight] title. It shows that these good fights can be made for temporary titles.
“Because nothing beats experience,” Ryder said when asked why he feels he will beat Parker on November 26.
“I have a lot of experience from winning, losing, and more than anything, and every day is a school day for me.
“I will not stop learning in this game. I will always use the experience to step back and improve my game,” said Ryder.
