By Brian Webber: The WBC has now officially ordered IBF/WBA/WBC welterweight champion Mistake ‘The Truth’ Spence to defend against Keith ‘One Time’ Thurman in his next fight.
In a move that was predicted by many ahead of time, the World Boxing Council ordered the unbeaten Spence (28-0, 22 KOs) to defend his WBC 147-lb title against #1 Thurman (30-1, 22 KOs) during today’s general meeting of the Sanctions Commission in Mexico.
With the WBC ordering Spence-Thurman, it really takes the guesswork out of Spence’s next fight unless he wants to relinquish that belt or the organization takes it away from him.
Given that Spence is still eager to fight WBO 147-lb champion Terence Crawford in early 2023 for the bantamweight championship, he will need to face Thurman if he wants to retain that prestigious title.
Boxing fans will now have to wait to see if Spence in his youth gives up his WBC because he may still have a grudge against Thurman for not fighting him earlier this year or if he will show maturity by forgiving him. his previous anger and his defense.
On paper, former WBA & WBC welterweight champion Thurman is a dream come true for Spence, given that he has the power, speed, mobility, boxing ability, and defensive skills to force the Texas native into a dogfight.
Spence looked injured in his last fight against former WBA welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas last April in a fight that saw both fighters injured.
Ugas nearly knocked Spence out early in the fight after landing a right hand that knocked him unconscious for a short period of time.
The tight left that Thurman likes to fight could be a real problem for Spence in this fight if he can’t do something to protect it.
Thurman landed consistent shots in his last fight against Mario Barrios in February of this year, winning 12 rounds overall.
‘One Time’ Thurman looks like he’s coming out of the theater suspended, showing no signs of age from the best he was during the zenith of his career from 2012 to 2017.
The only sign of Thurman’s age in the Barrios fight was his retreating line, which wouldn’t have been as noticeable if he had cut his hair.
The way Thurman looks at this fight, he has a real chance of winning against Spence.
