A new event is to shine the spotlight on original music in the Dorset area – and fully recognises
They are the original Music Awards Dorset, otherwise known as OMA.
Created by Matt Black, pictured left, and Mel Berkhauer of Hangover Limited and founders of Live & Unheard, the movers and shakers of the music scene are invited to come together for a special awards night on January 20, 2023.
Industry guests will present 13 awards with more than 30 nominated musical acts.
Everyone will receive a complimentary ticket.
The categories are:
- Best Solo Performance
- best newbie
- best band
- Best Small Band (Duo/Trio)
- best festival
- Best open mic night ever
- Best event support
- The best preacher
- Best original music venue
- 3 x contributions to the original music scene.
Organizers say the aim is to celebrate original music in the Dorset area and connect the community together, as well as involve the national music industry.
Major sponsors are Absolute Music, retailers, recording studios and educational providers.
Award sponsors include Sontronics Microphones; Lighthouse, Poole’s Center for the Arts and Forest FM.
Other organizations invited are BBC Music Introducing, PPL and the Musicians’ Union.

Industry representatives are requested to be nominated for each category.
Various live music venues as well as ‘supporting panels’ include:
- Dave Chinary – Rock Rebirth, Illustrated
- Tim Heywood – Rock Regeneration and Live Wire
- Ian Bennett – Forrest FM
- Ski – Jimmy Hillbillies and we do events
- Suzy Wheeler – Represents Absolute Music and Strawberry Fields.
The Original Music Awards Dorset will take place at the Allendale Center in Wimborne which will be transformed into a rock and roll awards venue.
Tickets are £30 each and include admission with a two-course meal and entertainment.
The box office will open when the nominations are announced later this month.
